Creating Better Leadership Development Programmes

Leaders and managers are the backbone of any organisation. They’re responsible for processes and play a key role in supporting and inspiring their teams.

But let’s face it – truly inspirational leaders who can unite a workforce and drive success are rare. That makes them incredibly valuable. So, why do so many leadership training programmes fail to produce such leaders?

Here are some of the most significant issues with leadership training today:

It’s all talk, no action.
·        Most programmes focus on providing information – what leaders should do and how they should behave. But authentic leadership isn’t about knowing; it’s about doing. These programmes fail to deliver a lasting impact without focusing on behaviour change.

Too short to make a difference.
·        Many training courses are over in a matter of days, leaving no time for participants to truly absorb, practise, and refine new skills. Leadership isn’t learned overnight—it takes time and consistent effort.

No recognition or support for outstanding leadership.
·        Without systems to reward and celebrate good management, there’s little incentive to cultivate strong leadership practices.

So, how do we fix this?

Prioritise behaviour change.
·        Leadership training should go beyond theory and focus on practical, real-world behaviour change. Look for programmes that encourage participants to practise and embed new ways of working.

Measure and reward good leadership.
·        Create a culture where excellent management is valued and celebrated. Measuring outcomes and recognising success sets a clear standard for others to follow.

Showcase exceptional leaders.
·        Use your top managers as role models. Their success stories can inspire others and help spread best practices throughout the organisation.

Ultimately, outstanding leadership is about influencing others, inspiring trust, and making a positive impact.
